Overview

A precise approach to relieving muscle tension and restoring movement

Muscle pain and restricted movement are not always caused by the place where you feel discomfort. A tight band of muscle in your shoulder may contribute to headaches. Tension in your hip may affect your lower back. An area that feels constantly tight may be part of a larger pattern of compensation.

Dry needling is a precise, evidence-informed technique used to address muscular tension, trigger points and areas of restricted movement. At CALM Healing, it is never treated as a one-size-fits-all procedure. We begin by understanding your symptoms, movement patterns and history, then determine whether dry needling is an appropriate part of your care.

Using a very fine, sterile, single-use needle, targeted areas of muscle and connective tissue are treated to help reduce tension and support more comfortable movement. The sensation can vary. You may feel a brief twitch, pressure, dull ache or local soreness afterward. Many people also notice a sense of release or increased freedom of movement following treatment.

Rather than simply needling the area that hurts, we look at why that area may be working harder in the first place. How you move, where you compensate, previous injuries and the demands of your daily life all help shape the treatment.

What dry needling may support

Every person responds differently, and dry needling is not appropriate for every condition. People most often seek it for support with:

  • Persistent muscle tension, tightness and stiffness

  • Trigger points and sensitive areas within the muscles

  • Neck, shoulder and upper back discomfort

  • Lower back, hip and glute tension

  • Sports- and activity-related muscle tightness

  • Reduced mobility and restricted range of motion

  • Muscular recovery following strain or repetitive use

If you are unsure whether dry needling is the right starting point, we will talk through your symptoms and goals before recommending treatment. In some cases, another therapy may make more sense. Our job is not to add another service to your visit. It is to help you find the approach that best fits your needs.

We do not treat muscles in isolation. We look at how your whole body is moving, adapting and compensating.

What to expect on your first visit

Your first visit begins with a conversation. We review your concerns, health history, previous injuries, daily activities and what you would like to improve. We may then assess posture, movement and areas of tension to better understand how your body is functioning.

If dry needling is appropriate, we explain what we are doing and why before treatment begins. The needle is carefully placed into selected areas of muscle or tissue, and the treatment itself is usually brief. Some areas may respond with a small muscle twitch, while others may simply produce a sensation of pressure or release.

Mild soreness can occur afterward, similar to what you might feel following a workout. Before you leave, we discuss what to expect, how to care for the treated area and whether additional treatment may be beneficial based on your response and goals.

Often combined with our other therapies

Dry needling is often used alongside other therapies at CALM Healing, including acupuncture, PEMF therapy, low-level laser therapy, StemWave therapy and therapeutic massage.

Depending on your presentation, dry needling may be used as part of a broader approach designed to address muscle tension, movement restrictions and recovery. In some cases, combining therapies can help us approach the same concern from different angles. In others, a single focused treatment may be the better choice.

We do not use a technique simply because it is available. We assess first, understand what your body may need and then build an approach around your individual goals.
